A tribute to the two inverted bus graphics created for the PISTOLS song PRETTY VACANT. Citing advertising photos of different years of the buses used in the original design, PRETTY VACANT uses the destination signs of those buses as “NOWHERE” and “BOREDOM” for the song “PUNK”. The destination sign on the PRETTY VACANT bus was labeled “DEAD END” and “BLANK” to make fun of the history of this design (see below). The print was made by PEEL & PEEL&BLANK in consideration of the design. The print is the first PEEL&LIFT printed T-shirt to be printed by inkjet in consideration of the design. The product name “Fishbowls” is a nickname for the bus, derived from the shape of its windshield.
This graphic was originally designed for Suburban Press, a Situationist magazine in which Jamie Reed participated. The composition, however, was based on a graphic created by the San Francisco situationist magazine POINT BLANK! However, the composition of the artwork closely resembles the artwork of Van Dyke Parks’ album “Discover America,” which was released one year before the publication of POINT BLANK! The artwork of Van Dyke Parks is the work of Japanese illustrator “Shusei Hoshino,” who specializes in transparent sci-fi and fantasy motifs using an airbrush and is well known for his work on a series of Earth Wind & Fire albums. He is widely known for his work on a series of Earth Wind & Fire albums. Jamie and POINT BLANK!’s artistic philosophy was that “our printed material can be copied and reproduced,” and in fact, they often included this statement in their publications. The POINT BLANK! magazine, which featured the bus graphic in question, had the same statement on the back, and Jamie may have just done as he was told. At this point, it seems that POINT BLANK! is not suing Jamie, and is simply mocking him and wondering if he will continue to make money off our designs.
