National Front march in Lewisham, London in 1977.  Police protect National Front members at the “Battle of Lewisham” on August 13. 500 members of the National Front marched from New Cross to Lewisham, and approximately 4,000 various counter-demonstrations resulted in violent clashes between the two sides and between anti-NF demonstrators and police. 5,000 police officers were mobilized, and 56 police officers were injured in the riots, 11 of whom were hospitalized; 214 people were arrested for obstructing police, threatening behavior, assault, possession of offensive weapons, and throwing missiles.
