This book collects the work of Homer Sykes, who photographed counterculture activities at Stonehenge in the 1970s. Sykes gained fame photographing the British Folk Festival and then worked as a photographer for several magazines, documenting various counterculture movements. These photographs documented the hippie, neo-age, and new age communities that gathered at the Stonehenge Free Festival, held every June at Stonehenge, for several years. in 1985, a caravan of 600 travelers approaching Stonehenge The festival finally came to an end when 1,300 police swept in, arresting 537 people in what was “Britain’s largest mass arrest since World War II” and beating and hospitalizing dozens of peaceful citizens in what was dubbed the “Battle of Beanfield.”
