This is the first domestic sale of an original photo taken by photographer Joe Szkodzinski of the BAD BRAINS live performance at CBGB in New York City in January 1981. This shot was taken just after the release of the first single “PAY TO CUM” in June 1980. In October of the following year, the band recorded their first album, the classic “BAD BRAINS”, which was released on cassette only in May 1982. This is a scene from the early BAD BRAINS documentary. Signed and credited by Joseph Szkodzinski, photographer.

Joseph Szkodzinski: Joseph Szkodzinski, who grew up in Queens, NY in the 1960s, is a photographer who photographed New York nightclubs and numerous band shows in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Bands he photographed during that time include Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys, NewYork Dolls, Johnny Thunders, The Clash, BAUHAUS, Steel Pulse, Screaming Jay Hawkins, TALKING HEADS, and DICTATORS, and many more.
He studied photography and art at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, graduating with a BFA in photography in 1981. Since then, he has worked as a staff photographer for Image Bank, Getty Images, and the NYPD, and has also freelanced and contributed to newspapers and magazines. Joe Sokodzinski has taken his camera into the back alleys and backrooms of 1970s New York City to capture street photography that captures obvious moments of reality. His black-and-white photographs, such as one of a battered boxer staring at his reflection in a dirty gym mirror, show the grit of New York when it was still tough. It represents New York before Giuliani, before chain stores, and before loft developers.
