TAKACHO LONDON Liner Notes

11%13 FORDHAM BALDIES WAPPEN

I want to make a badge to put on my leather jacket!

One day, while I was thinking vaguely about it, a new card came my way.

It was the moment when several small dots were connected.

It was 2013, and I was in a record store in London, looking for some stuff. I found a cool card in the flyer section in the corner of the store. It was an announcement card for the release of the photo book “Punk’s Dead”. I later looked it up and found out that it was released in 2011, but for some reason I couldn’t find it anywhere at the time, so I guessed it must have been when the bookstore and record store I went to were sold out. I didn’t know if the flyer was an announcement for a reprint, or if it was just left over, but the picture of Jordan was simply cool, so I decided to take the few cards that were left behind as a souvenir for myself. After returning to Japan, I put the flyer on the wall of my room, and I was out of the book for a while, but in 2021, eight years later, DJ Morio’s collection came to me through the front of a rock. Thanks a lot, Morio. As I was flipping through the rare photos at home, my hand stopped at a certain page. Hmmm…! Cool! There was a picture of Tracy, a clerk, wearing a leather jacket in the “seditionaries” store. As I stared at the photo more closely, I noticed a familiar skull patch on her leather jacket. The reason I was curious was that I had seen the skull patch on the leather jacket of “FORDHAM BALDIES” in the movie “THE WANDERERS (1979)” that I saw on TV re-runs when I was in junior high school. The reason why I was interested in her was because the skull patch that was attached to the leather jacket of “FORDHAM BALDIES”, which appeared for a moment in the movie “THE WANDERERS (1979)”, was attached to her sleeve.

THE WANDERERS is a coming-of-age film set in the Bronx, New York in 1963, about a group of boys from various ethnic backgrounds who gather there. Philip Kaufman and Rose Kaufman, and based on a book by Richard Price. Cinematography by Michael Chapman, with Ken Wall, John Friedrick, Karen Allen, Tony Karem, Alan Rosenberg, Jim Youngs, and Tony Ganios. It’s a 1979 film in Eastman color and Vista size. At first I thought it was just a fun, cool coming-of-age movie, but after watching it several times, I began to see the complex background of politics, racial issues, and the Vietnam War of the time that lay hidden behind the film. And most of all, as a middle teenager from the countryside who was starved for information at the time, it had some of the best music I’ve ever heard.

I had never seen the original or even a reproduction of the music, although I had heard from others that reproductions had existed for the past 40 years. Even now, 20 years after we entered the Internet age, it is still rare to see a reproduction. I had experienced TEDDY BOY as much as anyone else, but I had never been a rock ‘n’ roll salvager, and it is true that I had some hesitation in making this patch as I am not a fanatic or anything, but I concluded “FROM ROCK” with the aforementioned “Tracy’s right hand man”. I wanted to reproduce the “FROM ROCK ‘N’ ROLL TO PUNK” patch that I concluded in the aforementioned “Tracy’s Right Hand” in a very high concentration in this day and age where the value of things has become less and less, so I decided to make this patch again, this time with a new design based on the movie THE I decided to proceed with the redesign with the hope that new perspectives and sensibilities found in the movie THE WANDERERS would be born here again.

I started to create a base design from existing images and screenshots, but as mentioned above, I did not have the actual product at hand, and the work was difficult to find the correct solution in the images that I kept revising and correcting from the few materials I had available. However, as mentioned above, they did not have the actual product on hand and were unable to find the correct image to complete the project after many revisions and modifications based on a limited amount of data. After hours of research, image analysis, and revisions, the lack of an actual image was an insurmountable handicap that ultimately led to the unfortunate conclusion that the project had to be abandoned. 、、、、、、

However, the story did not end here. After the decision was made to cancel the production, I was in Nagoya for another meeting when Iwamae asked me to show him something. In his hands were two of those skull patches. I asked him in a panic, “What is this? I asked him in a panic. He answered. I told this to tattoo artist CxTxM Masato, who told me that he had collected them. He is a man of exceptional taste. The miracle of UNDERGROUND FRIENDSHIP left me speechless. I was speechless at the miracle of UNDERGROUND FRIENDSHIP. The miraculous crossbow of a fading afterimage connected to hardcore punk through a rock ‘n’ roll tattoo. There was no reason for me to hesitate any longer. A new 1%13 meeting was held on the spot, and after verifying the details and deciding on the changes, it was decided to relaunch the lineup as a new 1%13 lineup.

We thoroughly examined both the original and the reproduction, and proceeded to produce samples with all the essence and new ideas that we could contain, such as embroidery threads, embroidery direction, colors, background materials, processing methods, etc., in order to release them as 1%13 and not just a reissue. The difference between the original and the reproduction was the detail of the embroidery and the eyes, so the design was based on the original. I was worried about how it would turn out, but a few weeks later, the finished sample looked OK at first shot. However, the four different types of exquisite samples that came up were of such high quality that we could not choose the best one for the final landing. After much groaning and groaning with Iwamae, we decided to release the same design with two slightly different types of specifications.

A) New model
In order to synchronize with the 1%13 patch released, a felt background was used. This is a material that can enjoy the same deterioration over time. The color is a blood red, close to the color in Tracy’s photo. The color is a blood red, which is close to the color in Tracy’s photo, although it appears brighter in the photo due to the flashlight. The backing is a standard type with glue and can be ironed on. The threads that surround the patch are made by the modern heat-cut method.

B) Vintage specifications
A classic-style twill cotton fabric used for old patches is used for the background, which is selected from the lineage, and a dark red color is chosen. The color is a dark red. The mellow edge is edged with a lock sewing machine, which is not commonly used anymore. This method was often used for military goods because it prevents dust from accumulating. This is the difference between an old badge and a modern badge. The lining is a classic design with no glue.

The manufacturing is purely domestic in Japan, go figure. I’ll say it again and again, take another look at the wonderful technology of our own industry! The unique Japanese craftsmanship that has been passed down from one generation to the next must not be allowed to die out! And, so as not to disturb the original taste, the name of 1%13 is embroidered in the same color thread as LOVE & REVENGE.

The uses are endless: marking on leather jackets, G-jans, MA-1s, cargo pants, half pants, army shirts, flannel shirts, and anywhere else you can think of. The skull patch, which is not too much but highly concentrated, changes into something else depending on the sensitivity of the wearer.

The inner space with a diameter of 75mm is now far beyond the realm of mere reprinting. Experience the essence of a violent round trip between rock ‘n’ roll and punk, which jumped over time and space and appeared before your eyes, with this miraculous patch.
