This is the second disc guide by the duo of Norifumi Sugimoto and Takamasa Kato, who produced the legendary cult metal disc guide “Vintage and Evil” (Alterna Publishing, 2018).
This disc guide focuses on “doom metal/stoner rock/sludgecore,” a subgenre of heavy metal/hard rock that has many core fans. The guide traces the roots of these genres back to the 60s and 70s, when these genres did not exist, and then chronologically arranges the albums from the 80s, when doom metal emerged, the 90s, when stoner rock and sludgecore emerged, and the 2000s onward, when both the spread of these genres and their musicality converged due to the “return to retro/vintage” trends. The works are arranged by decade.
The book is an unusually large volume for a disc guide specializing in a subgenre, with 1204 titles introduced, drawn from a wide variety of fields, including hard-to-find titles, J-pop, hip-hop, and books. The authors include band members, record store clerks, label managers, and others who live “on the scene” of the underground scene.
It also includes the commentary column “What is Doom/Stoner/Sludge” by Takamasa Kato, the supervisor.
